Meet Our Team

Dr. Eduardo de Marchena is the Associate Dean for International Medicine, Professor of Medicine and Surgery. He is an interventional cardiologist who has widely published in various areas of cardiovascular medicine and structural heart disease. During his tenure at the University, Dr. de Marchena has spearheaded key programs for the Heart Transplantation and Interventional Cardiology. He has served as the Chairman of the University of Miami Medical Group, as Chief of the Division of Cardiology and as Interim Chairman of the Department of Medicine. He is a pioneer and Program Director, Eberhard Grube International Structural Heart Training Program and Co-Director of Interventional Cardiology training program at University of Miami Leonard Miller School of Medicine.

As a researcher, his work has resulted in several patents, and patent applications in percutaneous cardiovascular devices. His commitment to education is evident in the numerous medical education presentations, symposia and conference in all areas of Cardiology throughout the United States and Latin America. Furthermore, Dr. de Marchena has served as the medical director and co-director of several symposiums here in Miami and in South America. Miami Valves is an annual international conference on Transcatheter Therapies of Valvular and Structural Heart Disease to highlight state-of-the-art practice in transcatheter valve replacement to update medical professionals on current and future techniques to ensure safety and effective patient care.

As Associate Dean of International Medicine, Dr. de Marchena leads the International Medicine Institute, Division of Education and Training and Division and the International Research Division. Through the International Education and Training Division, the University educates and trains medical students and physicians from Latin America and the Caribbean. Under his direction, Dr de Marchena extended the observership programs to the global community. To date, over 4,800 professionals have participated in the education and training division.

The Cuban Medical Society and Alpha Omega Alpha have recognized Dr. Eduardo de Marchena for his contribution to the medical field. He is a recipient of the University of Miami Iron Arrow Award. The American Heart Association presented to him the Cor’ Vitae Award in 2009. He has received the Merit Award Visiting International Professor in several international universities. The University of Miami Medical Alumni Association honored him with the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award. Later in 2016, he received the Diversity Award, Department of Medicine State of Department Address, and just recently, Dr. de Marchena was inducted as the 2017 recipient of the Medical Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame Award. Additionally, he has been acknowledged several times by the Best Doctors in America.
