Eduardo J. de Marchena, M.D. ’80, has been named the 2017 recipient of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Medical Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame Award. The honor will be presented March 4 at the Reunions Banquet at The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, Miami.
A team of cardiology researchers led by Eduardo J. de Marchena, M.D., professor of medicine and surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, is seeking low-risk subjects for the next phase of an ongoing series of trials comparing the outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) versus conventional open-heart surgery. In prior trials, TAVR produced equivalent or superior patient outcomes.
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine signed a memorandum of understanding with a delegation from Mexico representing the Universidad Autónoma de Campeche and INDESALUD (the Instituto de Servicios Descentralizados de Salud Publica del Estado de Campeche), to foster collaboration on education, training, clinical, and research initiatives, and encourage the exchange of their respective faculty members and students.
Speaking at the Miller School’s “Zika Forum: State of the Science, Public Health Safety and Ethics,” Mario Stevenson, Ph.D., professor of medicine and Chief of Infectious Diseases, said, “We have a formidable team of virologists here who are up to the task of taking appropriate action against the virus.”
